To maintain the health of the body, we need a strong immune system. The immune system includes all the body's defense mechanisms against harmful agents: microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi), radiation, toxic substances, etc.
The immune system completes its development around the age of 10; up to this age, children are more vulnerable to the attack of pathogens. Cold periods, sudden changes in temperature and the transition from one season to another require the immune system and favor the appearance of illnesses. During these periods, an additional intake of vitamins, minerals and immunostimulating active principles strengthens the body and supports the immune system in the fight against harmful agents.
Vitamin C is an indispensable nutrient for the normal development of physiological processes. However, vitamin C cannot be synthesized or stored by the human body. In this sense, the need for vitamin C will be ensured through an adequate diet and with the help of nutritional supplements.
Vitamin C helps the optimal functioning of the immune system, the reduction of fatigue and exhaustion, the improvement of iron absorption, the normal functioning of the metabolism and the protection of the body against oxidative stress.
Propolis is the resinous substance that bees collect from the buds, sap and resin of trees and certain plants and which helps them build, disinfect and protect the hive from cracks or invaders. Propolis acts as a disinfectant, being responsible for sterilizing hives, places prone to viruses and bacteria, considering the temperature and humidity conditions.
The benefits of propolis for humans are also numerous. It is considered that it supports the health of the immune system, being helpful also during cold and flu periods.
Originally from North America, echinacea has been used for more than 400 years for its many properties, including immunostimulatory ones. In addition, in combination with propolis and vitamin C, it reduces by 55% the number of illnesses, by 62% the number of days of fever, by 51% the number of days of antipyretic use and by 48% the number of days of antibiotic administration according to studies clinics (Cohen HA, Varsano I, Kahan, Sarrell M, Uziel Y., Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 2004, 158:217-221).
The flavonoids in elderberries - anthocyanins, quercetin and isoquercitrin - help the body during the period when it is dealing with the flu or cold. In addition, elderberries are known for their immunostimulating action, contributing to the health of the immune system.
According to clinical studies, elderberries have an antiviral effect, reducing hemagglutination and inhibiting the replication of several types of Influenza A and B viruses. Thus, it has been demonstrated that flu symptoms improve after 2 days of taking a preparation with elderberry extract, and the average duration of illness is significantly reduced (Zakay-Rones Y, Varsano N, Zlotnic M, J Altern Complement Med, 1995; 1:361-369).
Zinc is an antioxidant, regulates the level of vitamin A and is important in brain development. An essential mineral for the body, zinc brings only benefits. It helps to strengthen the immune system, regulate vitamin A levels and regulate metabolism.
The body needs zinc to activate T cells, i.e. the lymphocytes used by the immune system. These cells are not only responsible for regulating the immune response, but also attack infected cells, thus protecting the body.
Studies show that zinc reduces by 57% the need to use antibiotic products and by 56% the incidence of cold episodes (Vakili R. et al. Iranian Journal of Pediatrics. Dec. 2009, Vol. 19).
Respiratory infections are most common during the cold season, but also in the spring. It is also then that the lowest levels of vitamin D in the body are recorded. It seems that the active form of vitamin D stimulates the cells of the immune system to fight against microbes.
